I love Asian food. Especially if it has some kick to it.

Living in Australia, we had the luxury of lots of fantastic Asian restaurants. Australia is so close to Japan and Thailand the food culture came to us in a very authentic way. I find  most of the Asian food I have had here in North America is bland in comparison. It is probably,  I just have not found the best places yet. (If anyone has any recommendations for Toronto, Canada, please let me know)

Today’s treat is a Szechuan Tofu Stir Fry. Again, all those wonderful fresh organic vegetables in my fridge called out to me, and said, Stir Fry.

Cooper (the wonderdog), loves when I make stir fry. He gets his four carrot slices (even though there are no carrots in this recipe, he still expects his supply) and four snow peas.

Szechuane Tofu Stir Fry

Szechuan Tofu Stir Fry

Szechuan Tofu

Serves 4

  • Olive oil
  • 1 lb firm tofu drained
  • Sea salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 red pepper Julienne (cut in thin strips)
  • 1 green or yellow zucchini Julienne
  • ½ purple onion Julienne
  • 1 cup snow peas, trimmed and left whole
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tspn ginger minced or grated
  • 1 tspn hot chili pepper flakes
  • 2 cups cooked rice to serve with

Sauce:

  • Sea salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tspns corn starch
  • 3 tspns soy or tamari sauce
  • 3 tspns rice vinegar
  • 1 tspn agave (optional)
  • 1 cup vegetable broth

Make the sauce:

Combine salt pepper and cornstarch. Add liquid ingredients and mix until dissolved. Make sure there are no lumps.

Drain Tofu. Cut into slices then into strips

Brown tofu in hot oil over medium heat in batches. Season with salt and pepper. Remove from pan and set aside.

Using same pan, stir fry veggies and garlic and ginger until just soft and the colours are vibrant.

Add sauce and hot chili flakes and bring to a simmer until sauce thickens. Add tofu and allow to heat through.

Serve over rice,

  1. Since I’ve discovered szechuan pepper I use it almost in every dish. I like your tofu, after MoFo I’m going to prepare it!

      • Hallo Tracy, I thought the pepper you had added to the sauce was Szechuan.
        It is an Asian flavourful pepper and I usually buy it in Asian stores. If you find it I suggest you to toast the grounds in a pan and then mill them in order to release all the flavours.
